Read an Ebook day

Today is Read an e-bookday and is a celebration of modern storytelling. Our classroom chose a book off the Tamaki College Overdrive site to celebrate. On the Overdrive site, there are a lot of different varieties of books you can chose from. You can choose humour, action, science fiction and many more. Read an e-book day is on September the 18th this year. We can read books anywhere and anytime we want. #Ebooklove 

Tamaki Overdrive

Kate Sheppard - Sketchnote

Shakaia and I made an online sketch note using google drawing, based on our learning about the Suffrage Movement. We made a sketch note to make connections with our learning and to show what we have learned. Learning conversations helped us learn from our partner. It was definitely an important skill for this activity. 

Suffragette movement

Since woman's rights was a big issue in the olden days our reading topic this term related . We watched ayoutube video about the suffragette movement and wrote a 25 word summary on "what was the suffragette movement". . I found this quite hard because it isn't a skill that I have mastered (summary) but talking to my group helped me make my connection.

Why Is It So Important To Keep Oral Storytelling Alive?

Why is it important to keep the maori story’s going because Myth and legends are a traditions way that have been past down from generation to generation .  

For this task we had to watch a video about Maori oral storytelling. We watched three videos talking about oral storytelling. We had to work collaboratively with our partners. We had to answer the question Why is it important to keep oral storytelling alive. The hard thing about this was that the videos were in Te Reo so we had to read the subtitles.

Summary

One of our reading focuses was to summarize a book called Eco-rangers Save the Planet. As we red we wrote down some words that are important. So we started off with 20 words then cut it down to 6 most important words.  Now we made a summary with those 6 words. I think this summary was quite good and we used good choice of sentences to fit the words. 

Poetry

 

This week we were learning about poems. I learnt about rhyming words. Rhyming words are words that sound similar with each other. An example is Where and Stare. They sound similar but they are two different words. My favourite Metaphor was " chocolate sea" because it was describing the tea of how they used chocolate and sea. There was also another simile which was " zoom goes the spoon like a silver typhoon" which rhymed and it had a simile because it had "like". I enjoy reading different poetry's and would like to make more of my own.

Samoan Tatau

Today Shakaia and I completed a DLO about Samoan Tatau VS Modern tattooing. In our DLO you will see the difference between modern tattooing and Tatau. What is Tatau you ask? Well Tatau is the Samoan way of tattooing. We have done this to the best of our ability. We chose to do Samoan Tatau because this week is Samoan Language week this week. Samoan people use different methods to us and different tools. Here is what our finished DLO looks like.

Magenta: A movie I have watched was an ANZAC movie about the war in Gallipoli. Shakaia: The book I have read like this is poppy and Wishy Washy. Mishaan: Something I have read was the War and Peace.	Shakaia: This reminds me about last year when I went to the Museum with my class. Mishaan: This book reminds me about when we went to Howick historical village and saw all the house that they lived in back in 1982. Magenta: This reminds of the book my old teacher read to us and it was called the Poppy.	Magenta: When my teacher read the story to us I felt like it was a funny book but then it became a mystery book. Shakaia: My reaction to this story is inspiring because they are a  caring couple and this book is very funny. Mishaan: My reaction was that it was sad because the interesting bit was he took all the doors off and the sad bit was that they died at the end.

This DLO that Shakaia Magenta and I had to make a connection in the story and kind of compare it to a text or a film, the world and the how we felt about the story.  One of my examples was how I watched the film " The Maze Runner" this related to the story because the country was not a democracy meaning that it wasn't ruled by the people of the land. 

'ight' Chunky Challenge

This weeks chunky challenge was "ight". We had to find words that had "ight" in the end of the word, the middle of the word and the start of the world. I gathered up all the words that I knew that had the chunk "ight" in it and added in the new words I found.  Then I made a word cloud about it and it turned out to be like this. 

Word Clines

  This is my DLO based a reading can do. I have done a activity on Word Clines. I have learnt lots about word clines, the definition of word clines are finding other words that are the same. E.g (Happy, Joyful, Delighted and more). My goal for reading today was to actually find a interesting words that I hardly use.

Magic Box Poem - By mishaan

I will put in the box....

The pleasurable scent of Lilacs,

A yard full of kittens coloured pearl white, ginger and black,

The stories told, passed down from my ancestors to me to my generation,

I will put into the box …

A meadow full of bunnies scampering across the fields,

A bakery filled with scrumptious cakes muffins and loaves of bread,

The tropical fruits from the pacific islands,

I will put into the box …

An antique box filled with ruby, emerald,sapphire and topaz jewels shimmering and sparkling,

The sweet harmony of birds caroling in the meadows,

Frothy whipped cream melting at the touch of my tongue

My box is fashioned Lapis and emerald blocks from Minecraft with diamonds from mount jubilee, with pink ivory wood on the lid and decorated with word of wisdom in the corners.

Its hinges let no dreams escape

I shall lock out all of my fears in my box

This is my magic box poem. Our goal was to create powerful imagery to in our own words to create a picture in the reader's mind. I found that creating a magic box poem can be so much fun because you can let your imagination run wild and there is no end to how crazy it can be.

Current Events

This is a current events DLO on the big sleep out. We did the normal who, what, when, where, why and how questions along with the what did the author want you to learn how do I feel after reading this and the points of view for each person on the current event.

Reading

Today for reading we done some games that is relating to what we have been doing. I played the trapped game and also the authors purpose which is called match generic2. It was fun playing these games because it will help with our reading.

Are UFOs real

This week for reading our task was to conflict information. We had to choose a topic of what we wanted to conflict on and find artical's if UFO'S were real or not. For this task I worked collaboratively with Zahra as my partner. After that we put our information together and wrote a small paragraph if UFO'S were real.   

At the game (Word attack)

This is a word Attack DLO created by Mishaan. This explain what how to say wrod that you don't know in a book. This activity is part of our learning subject Reading so that we know how to use it and why it is important. 

Reading Harry the book

We have been reading this book about Harry a boy that wants to share's his news to the class and when he share's his news very one gets Surprised that he wanted to share his news. Harry side that they  could have a good time to hold the  jawbone and then they had a good time looking at the jawbone.

Dictionary

We had to find out the words that sounded like Un, Mya and I looked in the dictionary and found all of these Un words. I found this easy because you just need to look in the dictionary and Write it on the computer.

Current Events

This is DLO that I have created with my group Evelyn and Mere. Today we were learning about Bus Strike in the Auckland City, we were also learning everything we learnt from the videos about the Bus Strikes in Auckland. Our learning intention is to identify the 5w's of a Current Event. We had to think about the 2 point of views clearly so that it was a correct statement.
